The Seehas
Bringing a Lake Constance legend to you
This 30 cm sculpture is a 3D-printed interpretation of the Seehas, designed by artist Eckhard Besuden. It brings the painted legend off the canvas and into your home as a modern art piece.
The story behind the Seehas

The “Seehas” is a legendary figure deeply rooted in the folklore of Lake Constance and a symbol of the region’s identity.
Local artist Eckhard Besuden is renowned for his modern interpretation of this myth. Moving away from traditional depictions, he created a bold, symbolic figure in his paintings. This character has since evolved into one of his signature motifs and an iconic tribute to the lake.
Behind the Seehas
Turning a two-dimensional image into a 3D figure was a design challenge that required precise digital modeling. The goal was to capture the essence of the motif in a physical shape. Through modern 3D printing, the Seehas has now stepped out of the frame, becoming a tangible sculpture that stays true to the original vision.
Smart cuts for clean details
If we had printed the glasses and snorkel as one piece with the head, the printer would have left marks and blocks across the face and ruined the fine details. So I separated them into three parts and cut them in a way that they can be plugged back in neatly after printing, so the face stays clean and readable.

The prototype
The first 30 cm prototype allowed us to check proportions, stability and details in real life. From there we could make small adjustments before moving on to further prints or a potential small series.

3D sculpting & refinement
I first blocked out the main volumes in 3D to test the silhouette, then gradually added anatomy, clothing and surface details. At each stage I shared previews with Eckhard, so he could confirm that the sculpt still felt like his original Seehas and request small adjustments where needed.
