Vintage Train Tail Lantern

This Train Tail Lantern recreates a vintage Zugschlusslaterne. These lanterns were once mounted on the rear of trains to signal the end of a journey. I built it to capture the character of a real object with history, that meant getting the worn hinges and the hand painted signal glass right.

Every surface needed a reason for its wear. That ranged from grip marks near the handle to paint peeling along the frame edges. In Substance 3D Painter I layered weathered metal, aged patina and subtle grime, then rendered the piece in Arnold so the materials read as convincingly real.

Behind the Scenes

Getting the glass and metal to respond correctly to light took a calibrated setup. A color chart and grey and chrome reference spheres helped me judge exposure and reflections, before lighting the final shots in Arnold. Unlike the environment turntable above, this pass uses neutral studio light, so I could judge shading and reflections without the sunset lighting influencing the read.

I modeled the base mesh in Maya with as few polygons as possible. That kept the housing and burner clean enough for subdivision surface to smooth it correctly at render time, without adding any real geometry. That control mattered most around the hinges and clasps, where the wrong edge flow would show up immediately.

Five UDIM texture tiles used for the Train Tail Lantern 3D model

The model is split across five UDIM tiles, that way each part gets enough texture resolution for close up detail. That includes the housing, the glass and the hand painted signal panel. I checked the wear and patina both in Substance Painter’s Iray renderer and in the realtime viewport, so the materials would already read correctly before moving into Arnold.
