Seehas

A Lake Constance myth comes to life

From painting to 30 cm sculpture. In close collaboration with artist Eckhard Besuden, we realized his interpretation of the Lake Constance legend: from the first concept sketch to the final, 3D-printed prototype.

The story behind the Seehas

Eckhard Besuden is an artist from the Lake Constance region, where the “Seehas” is a well-known local legend. Besuden created a modern interpretation of this myth: a playful, symbolic figure that quickly became his trademark.

For this project, he wanted to go a step further. The painted figure was to leave the canvas and be realized as a tangible 3D sculpture.

The Starting Point

We started with two sketches by Eckhard Besuden to capture the core idea and silhouette. His drawings served as a visual guide to define the character and its essential features before work in 3D space began.

3D Sculpting & Refinement

We started with a rough 3D blockout to test the silhouette and ensure the 2D design works as a solid 3D form.

Once the proportions were right, I refined the sculpt step by step, from shapes to fine surface details. This ensured the character remains effective from every angle while staying true to the original design.

Close collaboration

To ensure the 3D Seehas matched Eckhard’s vision exactly, we used a visual review tool for our feedback. He could draw directly on the previews and leave comments. This allowed us to precisely tune pose, expression, and details at every stage, with clear artistic direction throughout.

Smart Cuts for Clean Details

Had we printed the figure complete with glasses and snorkel in one piece, support structures would have been needed directly on the face. This would have left unsightly marks and ruined the fine details.

The Solution: I separated the parts. The glasses and snorkel can be seamlessly inserted into the head after printing. Keeping the face flawless.

The Prototype

The first 30 cm prototype allowed us to verify proportions, stability, and details in reality. This enabled us to adjust final nuances before the model was approved for further prints or a small series run.

Working with Mariusz is very professional and creative. He perfectly understood my vision of the Seehas and managed to transform the figure from my sketches into an impressive 3D sculpture. I was particularly impressed by his technical know-how: The clever solution with removable parts like glasses and snorkel ensured that the face remains flawless. Mariusz works in a structured manner, communicates clearly, and lets the artist participate in every decision. The 30 cm prototype exceeded my expectations, the Lake Constance legend is now tangible. Working together is a pleasure, Mariusz works at a high professional level and I can unreservedly recommend working with him.
